How do you use Epsom salt for sore muscles without a bath?

A few years back, all the injuries from when I was young (that I didn’t attend to) seemed to come back with a vengeance. Suddenly, I had severe shoulder troubles, torn meniscuses in both knees and debilitating nerve pain that radiated from my lower back and then back down my legs.

At that time, the pain was so extreme that I was having difficulty sitting, standing, or lying down. The thought of sitting in a bathtub for any amount of time sounded horrible, so an Epsom salt bath was not going to help relieve my pain. What was I to do? I knew the benefits of Epsom salt for muscle injuries, but how was I to find relief?  

There might be instances such as these where soaking in the tub will be elusive. Whether you simply do not have a bathtub, the bathtub is too small or too hard (like in my case), or you need home health assistance getting in and out of the bathtub, there will come a time when the healing salts and benefits of soaking will not be a suitable option. 

Fear not, for as we have learned, some of the benefits Epsom salts provide can be utilized even when there are barriers.

One way to use bath salts in a shower is to sprinkle them along the bottom of shower floor and shower as you normally would. While in the shower, the salts will dissolve, creating a soothing steam, which is the best method for salts with a strong aroma, as the scent will release, creating the same effect.

How do you use Epsom salt in the shower?

For a more intense experience, make a shower scrub. What to do – 1. Create a shower scrub with one cup of sea salt or Epsom salt. 2. Add 1/3 cup of olive oil, coconut oil (my favorite!), or almond oil, and lastly, 3. Add one tablespoon of vitamin E oil.

Mix well and store in a jar, and when you’re ready to use it, scoop out a small amount and massage it onto the skin in a circular motion. Rinse off as usual.

Here are some more uses for Epsom Salt:

  • Mix a handful of Epsom Salt with coconut oil or olive oil to form a paste. Apply the paste to the affected area and cover with a bandage. Leave on for 20 minutes, then remove. Repeat this process once or twice a week as needed.
  • Add one cup of salt to a spray bottle filled with water. Shake well and spray on the affected area. Leave on for twenty minutes, then rinse off. Repeat this process once or twice a week as needed.
  • Mix one cup of Epsom Salt with one gallon of warm water. Soak a towel in the mixture, then wring it out. Apply the towel to the affected area and leave on for twenty minutes. Repeat this process once or twice a week as needed.
  • Mix one cup of Epsom Salt in a small tub or basin filled with warm water. Soak the affected area for twenty minutes, then rinse off. Repeat this process once or twice a week as needed.
  • Mix one cup of Epsom Salt with a gallon of warm water. Pour into a clean jar or bottle and add ten to fifteen drops of essential oil (my favorite is lavender). Mix well and store in a cool, dark place. To use, pour a small amount into a basin or tub (if you have one or access) filled with warm water. Soak the affected area for twenty minutes, then rinse off. Repeat this process once or twice a week as needed.
